Now that I am like a third done with the book I noticed somethings that both this book and THE JOY LUCK CLUB share. First of all it seems as both of the books share mother and daughter relationships as a theme and there are still those barriers that exist between them. Also multiple people speak. Like every two chapters or so the speaker changes. It seems to me that Pearl's mother has a lot of secrets to hide. She really doesn't wants Helen to reveal her secrets. Not to her dauught and not to anyone else. Not even if her first bad husband died.
Like Trying To Erase Ink
Melting sunrise
Typifies
The way I'm living
Through your eyes.
Indefinite,
But almost sure;
Corrupted,
Yet still somehow
Pure.
Glass divides,
Reflection set-
Your eyes seem to challenge
An unspoken bet.
A chance to erase
Before it's
Revealed...
The courage to try,
And the strength to
Remain
Healed.

THE KITCHEN GOD'S WIFE

Well as some of you may know. Amy Tan also wrote this book, the author of THE JOY LUCK CLUB. This book well as far as I read has similar ideas to THE JOY LUCK CLUB. It shares the same country background: China. It also shares the same daughter/ mother realationship theme. In the book the father dies and later on the aunt. The mother tell her daughter Pearl what to do. Also they have different beliefs and disagree in some things. In a way that is how a daughter and mother realtionship is. A few arguments here and there and a hand when you need one. I kind of like THE JOY LUCK CLUB better because it consists of small stories with lessons to be learned. But I will keep on reading cause its not bad. Its ok. Sometimes stories get better as they go on. Questions I have are: Why didn'y Pear cry when her dad died? What was holding her back? Did she have regrets? Why does she have soo much pride in her mom not seeing her cry?

Emma (OVER SPRING BREAK AND LAST WEEK)
I finally finished reading THE BELL JAR. Overall I think that it was a nice book with great importance. Now I am reading EMMA. EMMA seems different in so many levels. For example its more deep and has to do with romance. I think that throughout the book marriage is a huge thing along with having a social status. It seems that the marriage and social status mattered sooo much back then. Like who you married depended on your family background such as what your family is known for, your reputation and how much money you have. Also being a women meant you were below men. I don't like how even though you achieve many things as a women you were still treated as a less. I wouldn't like to live back then. I like having my liberty and doing what I have to. Especially without depending on a man

THE HEART OF ESTHER

I can't believe that Esther tried to kill herself. How sick. In my opinion I think that no matter how bad life may get or seem, it isn't worth killing yourself. That is a very coward act. I believe that god gave you life so why should you be the one to take it away. God will decide when you will die. Anyways, I think that in a way trying to kill herself serves as an experience or lesson. Even though she wants to died, her body is determined to live. When she is trying to drown herself, her heart still beats. It doesn''t stop. Keeps on begininng. I think that this beating heart has a significant in the story like wanting to live on. Like there is little hope in a big mess and a part that is still working.

THE BELL JAR
Recently I started reading this book called THE BELL JAR. This book is quite interesting. Its about a girl called Esther who is offically living in New York for her one month job as a guest editor in a fashion magzine. What shocks me, is that it seems to me like Esther doesn't seem thrill about all the cool things she gets to do. A bet a bunch of girls would died for a job like hers and envy her so very much. I could tell this by the quote in the book
"I guess I should have been excited the way most of the other girls were, but I couldn’t get myself to react. I felt very still and very empty."
It seems to me like she can't make up her mind yet. I feel as if she herself is not sure why she is in New York to begin with. Its like she doesn't know how lucky she is to have a job like hers. I think she is still trying to find who she is. According to this poem by Justin Fitzpatrick, there is nothing wrong with not kn owing who you are.
"There is nothing wrong with not knowing who you are
It is not some unwritten sin
It is not a broken mirror in which to stare
It is nothing to hold your tongue to
Or medicate away
There is nothing wrong with not knowing who you are
Even the weather changes through the day
There is no followed metronome
No faults
No memorized prayer
There is nothing wrong with not knowing who you are
You are not written like a book
Or painted from a single canvas
Nor balanced like some perfect zen
Or worth just like everyone else
There is nothing wrong with not knowing who you are
There is no rule to follow
No category you must fill in
You have your own two legs to sidestep
You can be different every minute if you wish
And you do not need to be criticized
Or try to fix what others say is wrong
You can cry when you have no reason
You can wish when you have no hope
You can laugh when all is silent
You can breath when fear is stuck down your throat
There is nothing wrong with not knowing who you are
Not a single little thing"

GO ASK ALICE
So I finished reading Jay Journal last week. I think that overall it was a pretty decent book that takes you to this new dimension. It made me feel as if I lived in my own little bubble of drug free and witchcraft free. But after done reading JAY'S JOURNAL I found myself exposed to this other world that seems so unrealistic. Its like our eyes are open but we can't see it. Kids probably our age are being expose to drugs and all sort of crazy stuff. How sad and scary? Anyways it has a sad ending. He kills himself.
Then I thought to myself that I should read GO ASK ALICE. Overall its good. I can't believe some of the things that actually occur. They seem real yet so unrealistic. Do you understand what I am trying to say? You know what I can't understand is why in the end, Alice died of an overdose of drugs? Did she kill herself? Cause if she did then she is dumb, because Joel really liked her and her life was bascially fine. Or maybe some drugie that disliked the fact that she was clean give her something without her knowing what it was? Hmmmm... these are the things I wonder.
I CAN"T BELIEVE THAT BOTH OF THESE ANNOYMOUS BOOKS END IN DEATH AND PEER PRESSURE AND FEELING DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS ARE BOTH THEMES IN THESE BOOKS

Symbolism
This week in English class we dicuss the symbolism going on the parables of THE JOY LUCK CLUB. So our assignment was to post a blog entry what we think is the symbol in our books. Since I am reading this book, JAY'S JOURNAL I decided that the symbol is a cross. I think that the symbol is the cross because it shows how Jay believes in God and has strong feelings for worshipping God. I think that throughout the story a cross shows hope and wonder. It shows the light and the darkness. The cross itself shows the savior for mankind sins and the end of Jesus' pain. The cross is full of so much mystery like the book.
FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN READING THIS BOOK: As I mention in my previous post, this book is somewhat related to GO ASK ALICE. Its about this goody boy that is into school like most of us who is involve in extra- currurilar school things like the Debate Team. One day he fell in love with this girl name Debbie. Debbie, a drug addict who overuses and abuses prescribed drugs. She convinces Jay that she loves him and convinces him to steal medcine from his dad's pharmacy for her. One day his dad catches him and sends him to this rehab center kind of thing. There he meets this guy who is suppose to be his mentor. Soon Jay finds out that his mentor is into witchcraft. Soon he finds himself trap between the world he knows to this new witchcraft dimension. To his discovery, so many kids are into this sort of stuff and do crazt things. ALMOST DONE READING!
